Unit 6: Thermochemistry
Chemistry is the study of matter and energy and the changes between the two. Up to this point we have focused on the matter side of the equation but now it is time to begin discussing energy in much greater detail.

We begin unit 6 by reviewing potential energy diagrams. Then begin discussing enthalpy in greater detail. Enthalpy, or heat, is the degree of hotness in something and is related to both its temperature and mass. The Eureka video linked below might help you better understand this. |

We continue our discussion of enthalpy by calculating it through alternative means: tables, bond energy, and hess' law. |
In our final lesson on enthalpy we discuss how the application of more energy causes a system to undergo a phase change. As energy is absorbed a substance will heat up, and kinetic energy increases. However once a substance reaches it's melting or boiling point the energy added is used in weakening it's intermolecular forces and potential energy rises. This lesson goes over calculating that energy transfer.
