Unit 5: Chemical Kinetics
It's time to discuss the speed at which reactions occur. This is largely determined by experimentation, so we will have a sizable amount of data analysis ahead of us. Personally, I find this unit very interesting as it really is just logic puzzles.

Chemical kinetics deals with how fast a reaction occurs. In order for a reaction to happen at all two reactants must collide with enough energy and in the correct orientation to covert that kinetic energy into bonding energy. In this first unit we will cover collision theory and relative rate law. |
|
For the quiz for this unit you will be asked to
–Determine the order of the reaction for each reactant
–Determine the over all order
–Use stoichiometry or data to determine the concentration of a reactant
–Justify a mechanism and identify the slow step.

Moving from the relative rate law, we can begin to analyze data and look at the over all rate law of the reaction. In this lesson we covered the two ways to go about doing the differential rate law. You do NOT need to know both methods but should instead choose one that you feel most comfortable with. |
In unit 5.3 we cover the data analysis we will do in the lab for this unit -- integrated rate law. This is mostly straight forward as all you need to be able to do is read a graph and understand a linear regression (y = mx + b). Don't be scared. |

The final sub unit of this section is some last minute discussions on mechanisms and reviewing of the lab procedure. Make sure you complete your personal progress check as next class we will test out of unit 5 |
After this lesson you'll need to complete the personal progress check for Unit 5. This will be a quiz grade, so do your best. Earning a score that is highlighted in yellow will earn you a 3/5, light green will net you a 4/5, but get that coveted green and you'll get earn a 5/5
